But 529 plans do have a contribution limit. So if you’re looking to give more to your child’s education (or you want to shop around before settling on a savings plan), here are some other options.
Coverdell Education Savings Account (CESA)
CESAs can be purchased through most brokerage and fund companies. This option provides broad investment choices and features tax-free earnings as long as they are used to pay for qualified education expenses, including elementary and high school costs.

* Contribution limits: $2,000 per year, per child.
* Qualification restrictions: Adjusted gross income must be less than $110,000 for a single filer or $220,000 for those married filing jointly.
* Financial aid treatment: Same as 529 plans.

UGMA/UTMA Custodial Account
Most financial institutions can set up UGMA/UTMA accounts for you. The first $800 of income is tax-free if the child is 13 or under. The next $800 is taxed at the child’s rate and any more income is taxed at the parents’ rate.

* Contribution limits: None, although gifts greater than $11,000 per child are subject to gift tax.
* Qualification restrictions: None.
* Financial aid treatment: Beware that this account is considered to be a student asset, so it is assessed at a 35% rate according to the national financial aid formula.

Taxable Account
Taxable accounts have no contribution limits and can be invested broadly in stocks, bonds or mutual funds. There are no direct tax benefits but you can save on taxes by investing in an index fund.

Kiss Trust
This is an irrevocable trust that is designed to earn a large sum of money over the lon -term. Even the most modest gift can grow into hundreds of thousands of dollars over time with the compounded growth in a Kiss Trust. These accounts can start at birth and mature over time until the child is retirement age, if desired. A gift of $2,500 to a small child, for example, has a projected value of $1.3 to $1.5 million by the time the child reaches age 65 because of the compounding interest set up in this type of trust. The funds can be taken out at college age as long as the trust is set up that way at inception. These funds stay in the donor’s name, so they never adversely affect the student’s financial aid consideration. A Kiss Trust can be invested in a tax-deferred annuity or an after-tax mutual fund.

Infinite Banking
Under this concept, loans are taken out from whole life insurance policies to fund college tuition for beneficiaries. The beneficiary is not taxed and there is no adverse affect on financial aid consideration because it is not in the student’s name.

If you’re serious about saving your dosh, keeping it in a shoe box isn’t going to cut it. It’s time to start a savings account. This account should be separate from your checking or “spending money” account. Look for a bank that offers a higher interest rate (that’s the money the bank pays you to keep your cash with them) and also make sure they don’t charge you a lot of service fees. In fact, a lot of banks don’t charge kids any service fees at all, so shop around to find the right bank for you.

Start Saving Your Money Now

The next step is to start putting money in your account. Start with whatever you have, whether it’s five bucks or a thousand, it all helps. The best thing to do is to make a saving plan. Decide how much you’re willing to put aside every month and then do it. If you already have a checking account, most banks will be able to set up an automatic transfer every month - so the cash will come out of your checking account and go into your savings automatically. This is helpful cuz it’s way easier to save money if you never have a chance to spend it in the first place.

Advanced Options: Investing Your Money

If you have a serious goal (paying for college, backpacking through Europe after graduation, etc.) the best idea is to start making your money work for you. The way to do this is to invest your money somewhere where it’s going to make more interest than in your savings account. Here are some options:
# Bonds: When you buy a bond it means you are lending money to someone (for example, your government or a company). With a bond you get a higher rate of interest than with a bank account, but you have to wait longer to get your money back (sometimes 10-15 years).
# Stocks: When you buy stocks you are actually buying a tiny piece of a big company (for example, you can buy stocks in Disney, McDonald’s or Nike). You can often make a lot of interest in the stock market but you also run the risk of losing money too. If the stock goes down, the money you get back from your investment goes down too.
# Mutual Funds: Mutual Funds are like investing on your own, but instead you pool your money with other peeps and invest in a bunch of things (stocks, bonds etc.) with the help of a financial manager. This is a good option cuz you have a professional doing all the hard work, and it is less risky since you don’t have all your investments in one place.

Other Investment Options
There are tons of other investment options out there and a financial advisor, banker or a money-savvy ‘rent might have some cool ideas for your specific situation. If you’re trying to save up for school, you might find that your government offers some saving help. Some countries and states will chip in to your college fund, while others will give you (or your ‘rents) tax breaks. Check out your government’s web site or ask your school counselor.

Check your local credit union for help with teaching your children about saving money. Our credit union has a “Scottie Dollar Club.” There is no minimum balance, no fees, and each time our children deposit money they receive a Scottie dollar. Then a few times a year they open a Scottie store. It has small items that children can buy with their Scottie dollars. The child also receives a register book, and the teller records the child’s deposit and brings the balance up to date. Quarterly, account holders receive a statement in the mail telling the balance and activity, if there has been any. Both of our children have an account, and they cannot wait to put money in it. Add to this some discussion of the importance of saving and using money wisely, and as they get older, the importance and benefit of interest. Your kids will have a good foundation and have a little fun getting it.

Different Banks, Different Programs

Call your local banks about children’s programs. Our Citibank has a savings program for children. They had a promotion where you could open a Kid’s account with $10 and they would match it with $10. Then they gave each child a Little Account Book along with a “Savings Calendar” that had interesting tips on how to earn and save money. During the Holidays they always give away gifts to the kids as well as give them a tour of the bank. I don’t know if this is a national program but you may want to check it out. There are no fees or minimum balance needed.

I work for a large bank that is based in Pittsburgh, PA. We set up savings accounts for minors under the Universal Gift to Minors Act. The account is usually titled under the child’s name with one parent as custodian. It has no balance requirements and receives no service charges until the minor turns 18. As an added benefit for parents, the minor can make no withdrawal transactions on the account unless the custodian is present and has signed for the withdrawal.

Minor accounts are generally only available in a bank’s lower level of savings account. For example, you cannot title a FDIC Insured Money Market Account as a minor account. Almost all banks will offer you some type of a minor savings account, but the rules governing the account may vary from state to state. My suggestion to you would be to stop in the local branches of banks in your area and ask questions about what’s available. Always ask a “platform rep”, the sales/service people who tend to sit behind the desks at the front of the bank. Tellers receive only minimal training in accounts, while platform reps receive both teller training and in-depth account training. Start at your bank since you may be able to find package deals and you’re more likely to be working with somebody who already understands your needs at an institution where you have an established relationship. From there, see about getting some information from both the large banks and the smaller local banks in your area.

Many times you can get information from a small bank and then take it back to a larger bank for them to match the deals offered. This gives you the good deals that are available at smaller banks plus the service you would expect from a larger corporation (internet access to your accounts, 24/7 phone support, longer hours, etc.). Whenever you set up a new account, keep in mind that banks are, at their heart, businesses. Like any other business, they’re all competing for your business. If you shop around, you’ll find great deals.

However, while the Government may recommend stakeholder products, this does not necessarily mean that you are wrong to opt for a non-stakeholder or cash account.

If you are a cautious investor and are not happy to take the risk of investing money for your child’s future in the stock markets, then you may prefer a cash account. Non-stakeholder CTFs tend to be most popular with experienced investors who are prepared to take higher-than average risk and a big advantage is that you have a much wider choice of where your child’s money is invested.

However, unlike stakeholder CTFs, these schemes are not ‘life-styled’ so the underlying investment is not automatically transferred into lower risk assets as the child reaches the age of 18. Also, there is no cap on the annual management charge so it could be higher than 1.5%. There may also be an initial charge to pay.

Don’t worry too much about getting the choice right first time – if you open an account and it doesn’t perform well compared with other schemes, or you decide you would rather your son or daughter’s money be invested elsewhere, you can switch provider at any time.

Stakeholder CTFs are the Government’s preferred option. It believes that equities will provide better returns than cash over the longer term so stakeholder schemes invest in equities in the early years and are then gradually moved into less risky assets such as cash and bonds as the child nears 18 – this is known as ‘lifestyling’. Annual management charges on stakeholder schemes are capped at 1.5%

Most stakeholder schemes invest in index trackers that are linked to the FTSE 100 or FTSE All Share (although a few invest in actively managed funds).
Non-stakeholder accounts provide a greater choice of underlying investment. However, with a non-stakeholder scheme your child’s vouchers can be invested in any unit trust, open ended investment company, investment trust or exchange traded fund. Some providers only offer a range of funds in their non-stakeholder scheme, so if you have a specific investment fund in mind, you may have to go to one of the stockbrokers that offer CTFs. Cash accounts are lower risk than stakeholder and non-stakeholder CTFs as they do not have any stock market exposure and operate like standard savings accounts. New-born children receive a voucher from the Government worth at least £250 – those from families on lower incomes receive £500. They then receive another £250 voucher at the age of 7 and the Government is currently consulting on whether to give a further voucher when the child is in secondary school.
In addition to the money from the Government, parents, grandparents and other friends and family can invest an extra £1,200 a year tax-free.

Money held within a CTF cannot be accessed until the child reaches the age of 18, but by that time they could have a healthy nest egg to put towards university costs, a gap year, their first home or a car.

The amount they receive will be boosted significantly if family members are able to make use of the £1,200 a year tax-free allowance. If two £250 government vouchers are invested, the value of the fund will have increased to £1,029 by the time the child reaches the age of 18. This assumes an annual growth rate of 5%. However, if the additional £1,200 is invested each year, the fund would be worth more than £36,000.

Your toddler has been walking, climbing, and perhaps even running for months now, but suddenly he has developed “rubber legs” and demands to be carried everywhere. What’s going on?
